The generic name for Valtrex is Valacyclovir.
Valtrex® is a registered brand name of Glaxo Smith Kline.
Valacyclovir is a prescription medicines that fits into a group of medicines known as anti-viral. It is effective against preventing infections and reoccurrences caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
It helps relieve and prevent recurrent infections from herpes and genital herpes, also the varicella zoster virus (VSV), including, cold sores and shingles. Valacyclovir is not a cure for herpes.

Valacyclovir is the pro drug of acyclovir. In the body it is converted to the active drug acyclovir. Acyclovir then takes over and interferes with virus reproduction
In shingles Valacyclovir helps to reduce the fever and lesions and also shortens the duration of the infection. It also shortens the pain that occurs after the shingles have fully cleared (post herpetic neuralgia).
Valtrex Dosage Information
Take Valacyclovir as directed by your Doctor. Below is a guide of dosage and administration only.
Your Doctor will tell you the right length of time and dosage for you. Do not stop Valacyclovir or change your treatment without talking to your healthcare provider. Valacyclovir can be taken with or without food. Drink plenty of water while taking Valacyclovir to help keep your kidneys healthy and functioning properly.
Be sure to start treatment within 48 hours after symptoms start otherwise Valacyclovir may not work properly. There is no information available about the efficiency of the treatment when started 72 hours or later after an outbreak occurs.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster): The recommended dosage of Valacyclovir for the treatment of Shingles is 1 gram 3 times a day for 7 days.
Genital Herpes: Initial Episodes: The recommended dosage of Valacyclovir for the initial treatment of genital herpes is 1 gram twice daily for 10 days.
Genital Herpes: Recurrent Episodes: The recommended dosage of Valacyclovir for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days.
Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): The recommended dosage of Valacyclovir for the treatment of cold sores is 2 grams taken twice daily for 1 day and needs to be taken about 12 hours apart.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Valacyclovir, take it as soon as you remember and then continue your regular dosage cycle. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Wait and take the next dose at the regular time.
Herpes is a contagious infection and you can infect other people, even while taking Valacyclovir. Avoid infected areas from coming into contact with other people.
